Tuesday Tip

Disclaimer: Even though you may have heard Erik call me "Dr. Ashley" or "Dr. Stoner", I am not a doctor. I only have opinions.

I was thinking about this the other day and thought "everyone should know this" -- but this tip is only for those who wear diapers or change them, so it may not apply to a good number of you...although you may be able to share this wisdom with others who could use it.

When Libby was a baby she had been on an antibiotic and got the worst ever, most horrible, diaper rash... ever. Do you understand that it was bad? It was so red and painful that it was bleeding! A lot! We were trying the butt paste, Desitin, A+D, gold bond powder, warm bath water, whatever might ease her pain. When she was changed she would scream and cry (I would have too) and it was about all we could do to hold her down and get her clean, explaining as best as we could, through our own tears, that we had to get her clean or it would just get worse.

My brother and his lovely family from San Diego were staying with us through this and when they heard us trying to change her they recommended what they had been told by their doctor (a real MD). Now, they are the type who would do anything, give anything to anyone. They don't just talk, they act. So Darin and Jeri got in the car right away and were back shortly with a bottle of Imodium AD, and a few treats and fun toys to spoil the kids with. They are just that way.

We marked the bottle with a sharpie (diaper use only). We take a clean cotton ball and soak it with the Imodium AD and pat it on the rash on the child's bottom. If you need more get a new cotton ball and soak it and repeat. As much as possible allow it to air dry then re-diaper.

The results work incredibly fast.

I told my doctor about this recently and he was so impressed. The science is the same. Imodium AD helps neutralize stomach acid and does the same thing with diaper rash.

I know there are lots of ointments and creams but when it gets really bad we have found this to work wonders!

Happy Diapering!

Happy Birthday BB!

My big brother is turning 40!

4D reasons we love him...

1. Dad:
One of the best around!

2. Delight:
My mom told him he was this probably 10 times a day.
I guess he was her favorite, she never said that to me!

3. Droll:
His comedic qualities make us all laugh...for hours!

4. Devotion:
Steady and consistent to family and gospel.

Happy Birthday BB!

Flashback Friday: Gas Problems

I don't know why but the other day I got thinking back about a trip to St. George with a large group of girlfriends. We all headed down for a fun weekend despite me being very pregnant . My friend Emily had to be back for something on Sunday so I had no problem returning a day early with her.

We left Saturday night later then we had anticipated. When we stopped to fuel up in St. George, Emily ran her card and pulled out the fuel nozzle.

Somehow the nozzle must have been jammed in the on position because when she hit the grade the fuel immediately started spewing out. (At least I think that's how it went down it was sort of crazy at the time and I didn't take notes.)

Emily's first instinct was to jam the nozzle into the cars fuel tank while I ran around all crazy like trying to find a fuel stop switch. Unfortunately when she tried to jam that blasted nozzle into the fuel tank the gas splashed back and covered her.

Finally the nozzle was in the tank flowing but she was completely covered in fuel.

She went into the bathroom and tried to clean up, getting clothes out of her bag to change into.

Once she was cleaned up we got in the car and headed back north.

Unfortunately... that gross gas was still somewhat on Emily and the clothes she had been wearing were tied up in a bag in the back of the trunk but the smell was seeping into the vehicle.

For the next few hours we drove home amid the strong smell of gas fumes. I remember worrying what it was doing to us (and my baby) but I mostly remember, especially on my leg of the trip driving home, being very worried about an accident as Emily might combust!

Gladly we arrived home without any other problem.

Although, I do remember the problem of my very burnt belly and a hope to avoid or postpone my next doctor appointment that week as he would most certainly and emphatically scold me for my burnt body!

For the Book Club Girls

As an avid supporter of PBS Stations and their products, I was shocked when at book club the ladies were not aware of Downton Abby. I mean this is television worth watching!!!

So I had to post a recommendation that if you have not seen this delightful series you best get a copy of Season 1 and try to catch up. Season 2 is currently playing on Sunday evenings and you are three episodes behind already!

The Downton staff...

The Crawley Family...

The splendid Abby...

And then what about Lark Rise to Candleford...oh my ladies, you are behind the times!

Dorcas Lane

Laura Timmons

There are so many other characters to adore.  From the first season, Sir Timothy Midwinter and the Pratt Sisters, to recent Season 4 and 5 addition of Minnie (maybe she showed up in season). The characters are unforgettable. I keep pining for a return of Sir Timothy!

Love deeply

Photobucket

February will be here before I know it.

Better start planning.

 Doing the hearts for sure!
 Non-treat gift
 Doing this one!
This would be cute for a kids room or playroom.
Bingo anyone?
Can see us playing this in the afternoon.
Better get stitching.
I can see one of these for my girls under their pillow when they sleep.

Why I should be living on a farm

To finish off my thought from this post...

One lazy Sunday afternoon I wandered across a blog and fell in love with an idea.

The lot we purchased is a little under a half acre and very deep so we have some room.

Room to do some fun things.

Here, my cute hubby Erik, would debate the definition of "fun".

He needs to work on that.

Right.

I am always looking out for the welfare of our family so I came up with a great idea.

What would be better then to get CHICKENS?

We could be provident and self-reliant, we could teach work skills and values to the children.

I mean look at these guys...

And these adults...

that last one already has my heart...

I could picture the girls outside gathering eggs while chickens peck the ground...

wearing sundresses and aprons, of course!

The girls NOT the chickens.

Right.

The chickens would be the best pesticide and fertilizer EVER!

We'd have fresh eggs ANYTIME we want.

We could drop a handful of eggs off to the neighbors each week, in a cute little basket,

a basket with a cute ribbon tied on the side?

Really - we need to be good neighbors right?

It would totally save money.

I mean, really it's a WIN-WIN.

They would need a place to stay which wouldn't offend the neighbors.

I had in mind something like this...

Seriously this is like the Grand America of chicken coops. Who wouldn't like this in their back yard?

Doesn't it sound like a great idea?

BUT ERIK JUST WON'T GO FOR IT!

Two Pieces of Wood

Recently, I had the chance to ponder on this familiar passage of scripture.

Depending on which translation you follow it states...

1 Now, these are the words which Jesus taught his disciples that they should say unto the people
2 Judge not unrightously, that ye be not judged; but judge righteous judgement.
3 For with that judgement ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
4 And again, ye shall say unto them, Why is it that thou beholdest the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
5 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and canst not behold a beam in thine own eye?
6 And Jesus said unto his disciples, Beholdest thou the Scribes, and the Pharisees, and the Priests, and the Levites? They teach in their synagogues, but do not observe the law, nor the commandments; and all have gone out of the way, and are under sin.
7 Go thou and say unto them, Why teach ye men the law and the commandments, when ye yourselves are the children of corruption?
8 Say unto them, Ye hypocrites, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

As I pondered this verse, I started thinking about what the Lord wanted us to learn from this council. Here are the thoughts which came to mind...

Judge/Judgement/Judging

Jesus spoke about unrighteous judgement. Jesus spoke also of members of the privileged House of Israel who had gone astray from the teachings of His gospel. He spoke of leaders of His house who had been made High Priests yet still had a "summer home" in Babylon.

Jesus spoke of sin. I read a fabulous book my Mom gave me entitled, "Weakness is Not Sin". It certainly was not a book about justifying sin. Sin is sin and limits us from the presence of God. Weakness is more human. Weaknesses often lead to the most powerful and glorious change of heart. Weaknesses often, but not always, lead to STRENGTH.

We all have judgement. We judge between what the Spirit speaks to our hearts as right and wrong. We have to judge between good and evil every day. We judge how to spend our time, we judge how to bring up our children. We judge, consider and evaluate our lives.  Sometimes, as we kneel in supplication to receive guidance in our judgements, we see we are on the wrong path, we see we need to change. Sometimes, as we kneel, we see we are okay, we feel the confirmation and love of God in our lives.

Hypocrites

I know it's bad to hate something but I do this one word. It's ugly and hard. It is not correction with love. It is not correction. It's accusation. I really dislike it's use.

Why?

As we study the gospel and learn about a woman taken in sin ready to be stoned for her sins. The Savior asks for the man without sin to cast the first stone. No one did. The Savior admonished the woman to go and "sin no more" as she had no "accusers".

I am always sensitive in the use of the word hypocrite because really, who is without sin? In my opinion the minute you say it you become a "user" or you become one.

I have found in my own life, and as I watch the example of others and relationships between others, that very often the things we are most critical or intolerant of in others are often the things which we most struggle with or are guilty of. I am critical of worldliness, but that is because I struggle with it myself.

I've always liked the line from a U2 song... "A liar never believes anyone else." Same thread.

Casting out the beam

We have judgement, we have hypocrisy, but what do we need to do?

There is something so important here in the last line of the Saviors instruction on this point: First cast out the beam, then help cast out the mote. Should we never point out the mote?  No, that is not what I believe this scripture teaches. Why did the Savior use the word FIRST? Why not use only? Only cast out your beam.

Ponder the word HELP.

When we face sin, weakness, problems, heartbreak, trouble - whatever makes up our beam - we (hopefully) learn empathy and love, we learn about support, understanding and gentle guidance. When we have experienced trials, of one category or another, don't we become kinder and more understanding? When we make mistakes and repent, aren't we more compassionate to others when we do correct or point out weaknesses or sin? Are we not more apt to do it with love and kindness rather then cruelty and meanness? Does evil speaking, criticism, mocking, finger pointing ever qualify to the Savior as "help"?

Conclusion

Sadly in the world today this scripture is often interpreted and used with anger, mocking and finger pointing.

I think this is wrong.

I strongly believe the interpretation of this scripture is all about love, understanding and FORGIVENESS. It is about using our own personal experiences, our own suffering and tears, to help others through their own suffering and tears. We utilize the pain and knowledge we received removing our piece of wood to help others remove theirs.

---

I'm grateful for the experiences I have had, good and bad, that help me learn about the love of the Savior and His teachings. His love helps heal my heart and the pain He suffered, oh that horrible and unjust suffering, the cruelty of others, their mocking and scorn; it is that pain, it is the "wounded Christ" that heals me.

The End. Finished. No More. Moving on.

House Hunters International

Tonight you can catch Gabby and her fabulous crew on House Hunters International.

Aren't they all just fabulous! What a stylish family.

I would love to explore the world and provide an experience like they have for their little troop. Maybe we could house swap someone for a year. I would love to move to England, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark or Germany.

I wouldn't be able to stay away too long - cause I'd miss my family too much but man alive I think it would be such an amazing experience.

House Plans - Draft 2

House Plans - Draft 2

We have the plans with our first modifications back from the architect! I am so excited but it is still so nerve racking too.

We are still working on the roof line so he hasn't changed the master closet, which will end up being bigger due to the bedroom layout below. Also, the front bedroom upstairs will get bigger slightly, which will be our office/craft room.

In the mud room I want to add a drinking fountain in there somewhere but Erik doesn't see the use, just get paper cups he states.

Oh, I just noticed he missed the double ovens by the pantry door, but the poor guy had about a hundred little changes to take care of the first go!

We are still trying to figure out the basement bathroom which juts into the storage area. We can play around with it and maybe condense it, or move it around, maybe change the linen closet as I don't love the space behind the stand up shower but we could surely find things to shove back there. Any ideas?

Thinking about putting french doors into the basement family room so the sound doesn't travel up which would close off the stairwell railing, and then swing the door for the under stair space into the workout room so the other piano can go along that wall nicely.

Also, we are still trying to figure out the basement kitchen area. It's a huge area and we really don't need that kind of kitchen workspace downstairs. I've thought about throwing in some closet storage along a wall, craft/homework stations etc. for the kiddos. Any ideas?

The "Theater Room" will be an exercise room/dance room as we can do just fine with viewing shows in the two family rooms. Erik did mention we could put a golf simulator down there though - for these LONG, COLD Utah winters.

See below or go here...

Sweaters and Chicken Coops

Do you have a certain store which you shop at with a specific friend? A place that, if you go into, all on your own, you feel like something is missing. Like you left your purse behind.

Unless.... your a man and your reading this.

Oh, unless... you're a purse carrying kind of man.

Not that there is anything wrong with that!

Then you would know what I mean.

I know I could totally drive up to Gateway by myself but it just isn't any fun exploring the goods at Anthropologie with out Mandi. She is sort of a personal fashion consultant. I never would have bought my last sweater there without her but...shut the front door... I have sure liked that sweater.

This is the sweater that I'm dreaming of...

On sale of course.

And while we're there I could pick up some of these delightful little stoneware dishes.

I can just picture my little ones and those cute little hands pinching berries from them. Or sending those cute little ones out into the garden to collect strawberries with these dishes.

I know, out picking berries? I should live on a farm.

Um, I may need to address that in a post at some point, Erik doesn't blog so you probably haven't heard about my chicken coop idea?

Growing Up

A friend of mine and I were talking the other day about callings. We have both served as Relief Society Presidents and reminisced about the various burdens, challenges, blessings, and growth associated with this calling.

For me, this calling has helped me "grow up". I was naive about a lot of things. I had my ideals and my opinions. I am ashamed to say I thought I knew it all, knew how to solve problems, so often answers and solutions seemed so clear.

The biggest blessing has been that when those hands were placed upon my head to set me apart to this position, I had an instant and immediate feeling of love and compassion for the sisters. I instantly started viewing the sisters in the ward with the Saviors eyes. His love for them filled my heart.

As I said, I often thought I knew that if people just did this and this and this, then everything would be alright. I thought that solutions were simple.

Life is not that way. People suffer unjustly. Others are cruel, and make the path difficult for others. Sometimes people mean to do things to hurt others, sometimes it is just a thoughtless moment. The Savior and no other can judge our hearts.

I had a moment once when someone said something to me that was really hurtful, I left thinking... "when we die and our actions are replayed, I hope this person sees how I felt by what they said". As quickly as I had the thought the Spirit whispered to my heart and mind... "Would you want me to hold on to the things you've said that have hurt someone?"

I felt awful for even having that momentary thought.

The Lord is the only one to judge, he knows what others are going through emotionally, physically, spiritually. We are all on a path. This calling has helped me see that and recognize that I am in no place to judge, something I may have been to apt to do.

I still have huge hurdles to overcome. I am miles from the place I need to be or the woman I need to become. But I am grateful for the Saviors constant urging, for His gentle correction, for His words of comfort when I kneel to Him each night and express my sorrow for not being the woman that He needs or wants me to be. And let me tell you it's a long list EVERY night.

I am grateful for the opportunity to "grow up" a little.

"When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things."

Erik's Jacket

I love my husband.

I love my husband.

I love my husband.

But he has this jacket that drives me nuts.

He paid good money for it and by golf standards it's a nice enough pullover jacket.

I don't mind it on - it looks nice. No, better than nice... to quote Elizabeth "Dad looks hot!" I told her she can't say that, only me, but she just grinned.

Ahem... Back to the aforementioned jacket.

When that thing goes in the washer I curse the day it entered my home.

Why? How? How can one jacket drive someone to such teeth clenching fury?

This.

It has Velcro sleeves at the wrist.

What?

Background.

I usually throw nylons and my girls dance tights in with the medium darks. See, I have a home of six, five of them being girls and a husband who could very well count as one as he cannot wear anything the least bit dirty, we can discuss that later... SO we have enough laundry to have it's very own category called medium darks. I put these nylons and dance tights in with the medium darks because they stand out so when they go to the dry cycle I actually see them and pull them out and hang them to dry. If I wash them with the medium lights or lights they just get camouflaged and then get dried and in my opinion there is nothing worse then seeing McCall or Elizabeth in balled up, dryer fried nylons & tights.

Right.

So when the stars and planets align and this medium dark jacket is being washed with nylons or dance tights those darn Velcro tabs on the wrist snag the nylons and tights (along with any other string, seam or hook-able item). I then pull out from the wash that tangled mess and grit my teeth and curse (like dang and darn) that blasted jacket and the good husband who brought it into our home.

Now, I could train the good husband to turn the jacket inside out when he takes it off but then I am just as liable for missing it when I load the washer so I can't really complain about him...

Right?

Maybe that jacket will just disappear?

Elizabeth-isms

Saturday morning found us preparing the three oldest girls for a church activity while mom tried to get everything done before a presidency meeting scheduled for the same time.

Elizabeth cruised by wearing Capri's to which I told her to get upstairs and get some pants on. She complained that she didn't have any pants to which I responded by calling second mom to go investigate Elizabeth's drawers.

McCall soon came down very frustrated with the responsibility motherhood brings and said,

"Mom, the boot cut jeans are okay for Elizabeth to wear, right?"

"Yes" I hastily replied.

McCall finished...

"Because Elizabeth said she can only wear skinny jeans!"

Tuesday Tip: Cleaning Schedule

I think I mentioned this when I posted my kids weekly jobs and responsibilities here. I have a schedule which I try to use for my weekly cleaning.

Let me just clarify the word TRY.

Best effort. Yes.

Do it every/always/never miss a day. No.

Life is busy and by no means do I always complete this each day of the week. But the way this is set up that's okay, cause you can just get it the next week, so no sweat.

And some weeks I have to do a bigger cleaning on one day in the week and then do my quick touch-ups in the morning. I guess I could give you that run down. Later.

This schedule just helps me know what to start in the morning rather than running around like my head is cut off.

Which I do sometimes.

Occasionally... Erik comes home to every room torn apart throughout the house. He asks what happened and then I stop and realize what a mess every room is in because I didn't finish one thing I started. Erik then quietly opens the fridge and pulls out something to make for dinner.

THAT is why I try to stick with this schedule.

It's better on a marriage.

Right.

Let me also clarify that I am a big fan of cleaning wipes. They are a bit pricier than a spray bottle and rag but man, I just tug one out and bam... counter and sink are clean, one more tug? Toilet and seat are clean.

Let me interject here.

You could have just pictured me cleaning the toilet and then smearing all those yucky germs across the seat. NO NO NO... let me clarify, I always start my toilet by wiping the handle, then the cover, then the top of the seat, then under and last the actual porcelain throne rim and front. The innards get the usual cleaning with cleanser and toilet brush.

Didn't want anyone worrying next time they come over and have to use the loo.

Right. Again.

Wipes, Swiffer dusters, merry maids, whatever makes cleaning easier I say do it.

Rather than annoy the pants of you anymore with my ramblings, why don't I just give you the link to see the schedule and print it if you are so inclined, or use the info to spur your own dreams of sparkling toilet bowls and glistening floors.

Ashley's Cleaning Schedule

My schedule sits on the side of my fridge, until we re-did the kitchen and now it's just tucked in with my recipe books and I pull it out.  But this would be great taped in a cabinet door in the kitchen/pantry or laundry or your cleaning closet door, anywhere you can open it up to view easily.

And if it's unclear, which is pretty likely coming from me, when you see the 1st and 2nd etc. it's a rotation. I use it for the week in the month. Jobs like blinds and windows or washing duvets don't have to be done each week. So I rotate those jobs and do as needed.

Happy Cleaning!

The sun has set...

not long ago...

This book is so worn out it has been taped and re-taped together.

I do not need to look at the words to read this book at bedtime, the words are ingrained in my head with the turn of each page. (As are many other favorites!)

I was thinking over Christmas, about books that we may need to replace.

The Going to Bed Book by Sandra Boynton was one but I think we will update the book with the "Going to Bed Book" app. We love Loud Crow apps, so I was super excited to find this one.

And now I can hold on to that well loved, tattered and fuzzy edged book - which has been held by four of the cutest little hands ever - with out feeling one bit bad about keeping it.
